At the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2009 Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video. During her acceptance speech Kanye West jumped up on the stage and instantly grabbed her microphone and said: “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time…one of the best videos of all time!”
This interruption got instantly famous and became a popular “meme theme” in no time… in no time! One of the reasons why this incident got so famous, and suitable to be used in memes, has to be because of the inappropriate action from West. But, even though it was a rude thing to do, it is also a humoristic event considered the absurdness of this action. The popularity of this meme was however short. According to Google Insight the popularity sank drastically already in October – fifteen days later. Since 2010 the search interest has been around 5% compared to the 100% top in September 2009.
The World Wide Web is filled with other memes with celebrities and quotes that is taken out of context and changed into a funny punch line. One popular meme in the same category is Xzibit’s “Yo Dawg”. These memes are from late 2008 and are based on X’s TV show on MTV; “Pimp My Ride”. Another well know and popular meme nowadays is the Ryan Gosling’s “Hey Girl”. These to memes, similar to “Imma let you finish”, uses a celebrity's face and a typical quote or special incident to make funny memes.
The “Imma let you finish”-memes are characterized by a quote “Yo X, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Y (..) of all time. OF ALL TIME.” In addition, a picture from the MTV VMA of West with the microphone is pasted in the meme:
